I promised Nic, I would give him a shout out on here after his stag do – this is some of us doing our best Boy Band impersonation by a section of the Berlin Wall…
Episode 3’s Getting to Know you is about Clare who is 44 years old and lives in sleepy Suffolk with her 24 year old daughter (Jess) and 8 year old son (Joe). She is very happily single and not actively looking for a new partner, but is open to offers (guys?). As well as being a Mum, she work 20+ hours a week as a hotel housekeeper so her spare time is precious and involves knitting, baking, knitting and reading.
Into the Questions:
As a parent, what’s the toughest challenge you’ve faced?
My toughest challenge has been raising Joe alone after his dad took his own life. He was 12 weeks old when it happened so he never ‘knew’ his dad, he relies on the other adults in his life to fill in the blanks. If you had asked me 8 years ago if I would cope, the answer would have been “hell, no”, but I did, we did. Life does go on and it does get easier even though you never forget! Mental health awareness is now a subject very close to my heart and I find I am a much more open person since…
What do you enjoy most about being a parent?
I love the hugs that come out of the blue, the silliness after work/school and bedtime stories. I enjoy seeing my children grow into happy, well-adjusted human beings.
If you could, what one piece of advice would you give to a younger you?
If I could give myself one bit of advice it would be…being single doesn’t suck, it’s better to be happy and alone than in an unhappy relationship.
Anything else you want to add? (Free speech about anything you want… topics you want to raise awareness to, ideas for parents, difficulties, issues – literally anything)
As I mentioned before, Joe’s Dad took his own life. Please, Mums and Dads, if you are low find someone to talk to, don’t suffer in silence.
And, if you have lost a partner, it does get easier. It takes a while but you can laugh again and have fun. You and your children are stronger than you realise. Eight years on and I don’t recognise myself! I am always happy to chat or just listen, to anyone.
Such a difficult situation and ‘Thank You’ Clare for sharing. Clare touched on a couple of important topics here that I know will benefit others on here for sure. Mental health is always an important topic and you can find out more information here Mind. Mind, are a mental health charity with multiple locations around the UK. Also, you have the Samaritans who are a UK charity offering support to people who are suicidal or despairing, and are on hand 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Remember, if you want to take part in the Singledaddydaycare ‘Getting to know you’ parenting feature, then let me know and send me a message and I can give you more details. If you enjoyed reading this, then feel free to explore episode 2 and episode 1.
